Location:East 7th Street, between church and Beverly, Kensington, Brooklyn, NY. Not far from MS 839 (Subways: F/G (to Fort Ham. or Church), Q/B (to Beverly or Church / Bus: B35, B103, B68 and express buses) Exact address will be given after registration.
ABOUT:
The primary skill needed to fulfill the requirements for art high school portfolios is observational drawing. My goal is to meet artists where they are at. Some artists may be beginners at this skill, some may have more experience with it. I reinforce that observational drawing is a practice like yoga or like learning any instrument or sport. Everyone has their own voice — I am not interested in changing that. I aim to help them maintain their uniqueness while adding this important tool to their skillset. This is a skill that is great for portfolios, but more than that it will be something that they can draw on for the rest of their lives. If artists aren’t interested in creating a portfolio but just love to draw, they are welcome too!
The Fall semester for Portfolio at P.A.W. is a rigorous program meant to be taken in two parts. Artists can sign up for one part or the other but in order to make the best possible portfolio both parts are suggested in order to complete all four of the primary pieces. 8th graders need to take both Tuesdays and Wednesdays in the fall to complete the four main required pieces : Still Life, Self Portrait, Figure and *Fantastical Sandwich by the December deadline. 6th and 7th graders will be able to take the other program in the spring if they only want to work on two of the pieces now. In all of the programs artists will begin with exercises designed to help them see better (observe) so that they can draw what they see better. Then, artists will build on that skill and learn the elements of design and pencil skills. Most of the pieces are required to be made in graphite pencil.
The total required pieces are: Still Life, Self Portrait, Figure, *Fantastical Sandwich and one extra piece in any media or subject matter. Artists can submit up to 3 pieces in addition to these 5.
*The fantastical sandwich is only required for some schools but it is a great extra piece for all of the schools. All portfolios require 4 to 8 pieces depending on where they are applying.
Please note : Most 8th grade artists will need to complete homework outside of class in order to hone their skills and complete their portfolios. For 6th and 7th graders homework is optional.
