Portfolio 1,2,3,4 / Wednesdays
ABOUT: This is a rigorous program designed to teach the primary skill required for NYC specialized art high school portfolios: Observational Drawing. Artists will build on that skill to create the four required pieces : 1. Still Life, 2. Self Portrait, 3. Figure and 4. *Fantastical Sandwich. This program may seem long but it’s not, especially if your artist is new to the skill of observational drawing. I have tried splitting this program up but I find it works best when students stay together in the program and have time to get to know each other and build a community. Even with twelve classes learning this skill and building the portfolio will probably require artists to work outside of class. There will be some homework. I have some extra classes on Mondays if your artist needs extra support.
*The fantastical sandwich is only required for some schools but it is a great extra piece for all of the schools. All portfolios require 4 to 8 pieces depending on where they are applying.
DATES: Tuesdays - Sept. 10, 17, 24*(or Mon. 29th), 31, Oct 8, 15, 22, 29, Nov 5, 12, 19, 26
*If observing Rosh Hashana on Sept. 24 artists can make up that class on Mon. Sept. 29th.
PLEASE NOTE: PORTFOLIOS ARE TYPICALLY DUE IN EARLY DECEMBER OF 8TH GRADE the exact date hasn’t been announced yet.
Price:$1050 (discount available for those with need)
Time: Wednesdays, 4:30 - 6:30
Ages: 12, 13 (I have a spring program for 11, 12, 13 year olds)
Supplies: Included
Class Size : 10 (6 participants needed to run a program)
Location:East 7th Street, between church and Beverly, Kensington, Brooklyn, NY. Not far from MS 839 (Subways: F/G (to Fort Ham. or Church), Q/B (to Beverly or Church / Bus: B35, B103, B68 and express buses) Exact address will be given after registration.
Description:
In this portfolio intensive I will begin by teaching the foundational skill needed for most required portfolio pieces: observational drawing. As the name of it suggests, observational drawing is the skill of observing (looking) then drawing what you see. Artists will do exercises designed to help them practice this skill. Then I will guide them through the fundamentals of making a still life, a self-portrait, a figure drawing and a *fantastical sandwich. We will work from reference images and from life . They will practice drawing objects, eyes, nose, mouth, hair, face maps, figure mapping, gesture drawing, line drawings, the body mechanics of drawing and how to shade in layers with a full range of values.
My goal is to meet artists where they are at. Some artists may be beginners at this skill, some may have more experience with it. I reinforce that observational drawing is a practice like yoga or like learning any instrument or sport. Everyone has their own voice — I am not interested in changing that. I aim to help them maintain their uniqueness while adding this important tool to their skillset.
But, I also want artists who are serious about drawing to sign up. This is a skill that is great for portfolios, but more than that it will be something that they can draw on for the rest of their lives.
Please note: All students will begin the required pieces for high school portfolios but I can’t guarantee they will finish them. Every artist works at a different pace and this is a lot to learn in a short amount of time. I recommend signing up for a Monday program if you are concerned they wont finish or for them to block out time at home that they commit to working on portfolio.
